BMI in Five

1. Definition: Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation of approximate body fat percentage based on a person’s weight and height.

2. Measurement: Each person’s BMI falls into one of the four categories below:

3. Use: You can calculate your BMI to determine whether you have a weight problem. Your doctor may suggest additional screenings if you have a BMI outside the normal range, which puts you at greater risk for serious conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

4. Action: If your BMI slips outside the healthy range, consider it an early warning sign for your health. See your doctor for a physical and to discuss your weight. Get your doctor’s clearance to boost your activity level. Also, commit yourself to eating a well-balanced diet in appropriate portions. Your doctor can offer suggestions about the best meal plan for you.
