SPRING 2010

“My Tooth Hurts”

Tooth pain is best treated by your dentist, rather than in an emergency room (ER).

Dental care in the ER is not a covered benefit under most medical coverage, unless you need immediate care due to an accident that has occurred within the past 24 hours. You may be liable for the entire cost of the ER visit if your tooth, mouth or jaw pain is not caused by an accident.

In addition, most ERs do not have a dentist on staff. Treatment in the ER may temporarily ease the pain, but it will not treat your dental condition.

So, what should you do if you start to have pain in your mouth? Call your dentist for advice and arrange for an appointment. Most dentists have an answering service for immediate care needs.
